Earning a CSCS card is a key step for anyone working on a UK construction site. Before you can apply for the card, you need to pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) test. This guide explains what to expect and how to give yourself the best chance of passing.

Understand Which Test You Need

There is not a single CSCS test — there are several versions, each aimed at a different occupational group. The most common are:

  • Operatives — for most on-site trades and general operatives
  • Specialists — for workers in specialist trades (scaffolders, demolition, tunnelling, etc.)
  • Managers and Professionals — for site managers, supervisors, engineers, and designers

The correct test for you depends on your job role and the CSCS card you are applying for. Check the CSCS card selector on the operatives page or the managers and professionals page before booking to make sure you sit the right version. Sitting the wrong test is a common and avoidable mistake.

Know the Format

All CSCS HS&E tests are multiple-choice and taken on a touchscreen at an approved CITB test centre. Questions are displayed one at a time, and you select one answer from the options given. The Operatives test has 50 questions; the Managers and Professionals test has 52, with a slightly higher pass mark to reflect the greater responsibility of those roles.

You will also see a short behavioural case study section where you watch a brief video clip and answer questions about what you observed. This section is designed to assess attitudes and decision-making rather than just factual knowledge, so pay attention to the reasoning behind safe behaviour, not just the rules themselves.

Revise the Right Topics

The test draws on a defined set of health and safety topics. Rather than trying to memorise every possible question, focus your revision on the core subject areas:

  • Fire safety — types of fire extinguisher, fire prevention, evacuation procedures
  • Working at height — hierarchy of controls, edge protection, safe use of ladders and scaffolding
  • Manual handling — safe lifting technique, risk assessment, mechanical aids
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) — correct selection and use of PPE for different hazards
  • Welfare and site environment — welfare facilities, noise, dust, vibration, and environmental responsibilities
  • Legislation — key Acts and Regulations such as HASAWA 1974, CDM 2015, COSHH, RIDDOR, and the Manual Handling Operations Regulations
  • Hazardous substances — COSHH, asbestos awareness, working with chemicals
  • Electrical safety — avoiding underground and overhead services, safe use of electrical equipment

The CITB publishes a revision booklet, and it is worth reading it cover to cover. The questions in the actual test are drawn from the same bank that the official revision materials are based on.

Use Timed Practice Questions

Reading the revision booklet is useful, but actively testing yourself is more effective. Working through practice questions under timed conditions helps in two ways: it reinforces factual knowledge, and it prepares you for the pace of the real test.

Our free quiz tool lets you practise questions in the same multiple-choice format as the real test. You can work through questions by topic to build confidence in weaker areas, or use mixed-mode practice to simulate the full test experience.

Try to complete at least a few full-length mock sessions before your test date. This helps you identify any remaining gaps and builds the habit of reading each question carefully before selecting your answer.

On the Day

A few practical points for test day:

  • Bring valid photographic identification — a passport, driving licence, or national identity card is required. You will not be admitted without it.
  • Arrive with time to spare. Late arrivals may not be admitted and will forfeit the test fee.
  • Read every question fully before answering. Some questions include specific details (a substance name, a regulation reference, a quantity) that change the correct answer.
  • If a question is difficult, use the flag function to return to it rather than spending too long on it and rushing later questions.
  • The behavioural case study is worth approaching calmly. Think about what the safest and most responsible course of action would be, rather than the quickest or easiest.

What Happens After You Pass

A pass result is valid for two years. You should apply for your CSCS card promptly — do not wait until close to the expiry date.

Once you have your pass, the next step is applying for the right card for your occupation. Some cards require additional evidence of qualifications or experience. Our recommended resources page has details on where to find further guidance on card types and application routes.
